Athenaeum Portrait (The Lye They Tell) explores the commodification of the image of George Washington, his escape from the mold, and the continued degradation of his image. It recreates a Gilbert Stuart study of Washington, one which would go on to become the basis for the engraving of Washington’s portrait on the dollar bill. It aims to tackle the ugly truths of George Washington, ones that lie just beyond the surface.
